This is a bit rambling due to typing this on my phone. But, I'm Looking forward to more lectures worldwide; especially a tour of clubs in the Florida area in, I hope, October. Shortly I'll be lecturing in France and many in the UK. See website for info...

Nice that a card magician did a handful of my tricks on TV in the USA. Sales rocketed on the 27th Dec last. Funny. Tricks he did of mine were Jeepers Creepers, Twister, Flushed Oil Slick and Gordon's Aces.

My big "best of" book is in the works now that most of my books have sold out. In total, over 20,000 of my books have sold - since the early 90's - in 12 countries. Very pleasing. Details of the best of book coming soon...

Many thanks for the hundreds of 50th birthday wishes I recently received. A tad early, but thank you...appreciated.

Non-Enthusiastic Enthusiasts

"Can I clean the car? How about mow the lawn? Maybe walk the dog?" These are just a few of the pleading "bob-a-job" questions I asked (of my Dad and the neighbours) so as to earn a few shilings to fuel my schoolboy "magic purchases" piggybank way back in the early/mid 70's. To be frank, I'd do (almost) anything so that I could send off for the "latest" magic book from Magic Books By Post. Boy, was I eager and enthusiastic. And you know what...forty years later I am even more eager and enthusiastic. But, are all magicians? Methinksnot!

As a dealer (amongst other things) at conventions, I attend most. As a lecturer, I perform and teach at many. But, a trend is noticeable. Folks (in general) seem listless and jaded. There seems to be a lack of an enthusiastic buzz. It's as if (some) folks closed their eyes and were replaced by pods! (Check your garden sheds just in case the marrows look too big!) Joking aside, quite a few convention attendees appear - and are - non-enthusiastic. They simply don't look like they are enjoying themselves. It looks like a chore! "Oh God, yet another convention to amble around and look fed up at!" might be their pre-convention-over-breakfast muttering. Yea Gods! When I was an amateur (and beyond) I couldn't wait to get to the convention. I always arrived early (and still do) - always chomping at the bit. Shillings clenched tightly in one fist - shopping list in 'tother. I was litterally sweaty with excited anticipation. Was I alone? Am I alone?

Sure, I'm being a bit "global" (about the amblers), but I'm not far wrong! I know many of you are eager, excited and enthusiastic...but I think you are now in the minority. Why is this? My wife (Judy) thinks it's because magic is too accessible these days. What with internet, pdfs, downloads, YouTube etc., etc - folks are spoilt. Maybe the mystery has been sucked out of this racket? Well, maybe. But, it hasn't dimmed my enthusiasm! My theory (or one of them) is that some of the enthusiasts are simply in the wrong racket. What I mean is that they have (somehow) mistaken magic as their hobby. Look, in every other hobby/craft/artform - folks get involved and "do!" Can you imagine jaded amblers at any other hobby get-together? I can't. Can you imagine a non-enthusiastic stamp collector? Nope, you can't! Maybe some folks want to fool others but simply don't realise it takes dedication, hard work, entertainment skills and a dollop of natural-born enthusiasm. Oh, is enthusiasm natural-born or do we aquire it? Both methinks. What say you?

At the last IBM convention (Eastbourne 2010), I felt a deathly shadow looming over all and sundry. I really did. It was a far cry from the halcyon days when you fell-over folks doing card tricks in every queue, hallway, aisle and cubicle! (I once discussed a card sleight with Rovi at the urinal.) Eastbourne 2010 felt like a few hundred (if that) morticians had turned up to a redundancy meet. It really did. I saw no tricks, I heard no laughter and I sensed no enthusiasm. Zilch, nada, nothing. Dead! I sensed Kevin McArthy running down Eastbourne high-street yelling, "They're here. Run for your lives. They're heeerrreeeee!"

Look, I have more questions than answers, but it does make you think...doesn't it.

When I lecture/teach, I try to inspire. My motto is that if I can do it, any other bugger can. Or, can they? I've only achieved - whatever it is that I've achieved - through dedication, hard work (muchos practice) and drive. And I simply love what I do. But, and this is terse advice, if you don't love what you do (with a passion), give up. Give up to save yourself (mainly) and those to whom you perform for. Nobody wants to watch magic performed by someone who looks like they'd rather be elsewhere. Terse advice, but true. Use your energies doing something that you love...

On that happy note...discuss! (Rhetorically.)

Re The Magic Cafe: I'm often asked to rejoin TMC. Well, I left in 2007 for good reasons. The trolls used to get in the way of decent discussion. The same names used to appear when anything bad/negative was said; and it fuelled more negativity. They were/are too predictable; and they are easy to track due to a nifty bit of software I own. They are the same guys who appear on many/most forums. Anyway, life's too short to hang around these parasitic wasters! However, I'm missed the many good friends I made on TMC; but they all joined my newsletter and enjoy(?) my ramblings there. So, if you want to hear a few PG tips, hear about my latest stuff, receive a few freebies etc...join my newsletter. Another thing about TMC: Often folks get the facts wrong; even about good issues. Some of the "good guys" say nice things but God knows where they get some of their info from. One guy recently quoted the contents of Card Startlers but ended up listing the contents of my Blockbusters DVD. Another said my Muldoon Match used a double-facer (wrong) and another said I was in my thirties! Wrong. I'm nearly 50. Another said I was American (I'm English) and another said I've written 3 books only. I haven't; I've written 25. So, the thought of rejoining is not a great one... MAGICSEEN 4-Star review of Blockbusters With Cards 2-DVD set: : “Paul Gordon! You've got to hand it to him – he only does card stuff, and he's not going to change now, it's far too late for that. This double disc set contains over 30 card tricks which have never appeared on film before. Paul's an expert with cards, and an expert at handling close-up audiences – and you can see this as most of the effects are filmed at a private party. The standard of effects is very high, and you can see that they go down extremely well live. One disconcerting thing about this disc set is that some of the explanations appear before the actual trick – I think they call that the one ahead principle! We'll let him off that, as this is a very good release, and definitely worth the money. The disc starts off with a couple of poker-related tricks, which I'm not a fan of (poker, that is, not the effects). Head to Head Poker is a brilliant effect where a spectator has free choices of cards pushed forward (face down) – and even selects the magicians cards, too. The spectator gets an average 'hand' but the magician gets a royal flush. A self working effect which gets a brilliant reaction. Hellman's Aces is an effective aces/sandwich effect, and Dazzling Flush sees five cards appear between five others. Lighter than a Feather sees a card appear inside a zippo lighter, while Pseudo Smyth's Myth is a cracking self-working effect with one of the best forces I've seen for ages. There are lots of excellent effects here, including one of Paul's most popular marketed effects: Red Herring. The sleights required for several of the effects here are skated over, but most are not difficult. If you are into cards, then you'll enjoy this offering – and even if you don't, then you'll still find something to spice up your act, or stimulate conversation down the pub. Most of the effects are short, sharp and have good endings. Paul knows his cards. That's entertainment!” - Graham Hey

As our members arrived Paul was chatting and preparing quietly for his lecture. Once he was officially introduced his passion and enthusiasm for his art came flooding through the audience in waves. This was a marathon of a lecture with something for everyone and had even our die hard card performers watching with jaws dropped. The amazing thing was that these jaw dropping, audience tested effects, were easy to do and in some cases self working!

Paul is a great teacher and conveyed everything in his lecture in a concise and friendly manner. At the same time he kept the expert card guys captivated with extra subtleties, simplified moves and stories from his real life card work, with real live people!

Paul has created over 800 card effects in his career, and probably a few more since the lecture. And he can remember them all! This was another great part of the evening, explaining his techniques for remembering the tricks along with the people he meets. This he explained generated extra bookings just for remembering and taking an interest in the people you entertain.

In his lecture he explained many stunning effects, the simplicity of them was amazing! He also kept us guessing with a few! These you could buy after the lecture. Paul presented many, super commercial, effects. With many of our members snapping up Paul’s DVD sets, each containing 30 or 40 effects! There were many highlights in Paul’s lecture including the “Corner of Piccadilly”, a four card monte that made sense and packed a punch. “Oil and Water Rainbow”, the classic effect with a real ‘multi punch’ ending. “‘Sexy Men”, “Lottery Prediction” and “Head to Head Poker”, all from his new Blockbusters with Cards DVD. And he left us with his famous “Easy Ace Estimation”, as Paul says it’s easier than you think cutting to the aces.

What a great lecturer, highly recommended. If you weren’t into cards before, you will be after seeing Paul Gordon!

Karl Fulves and Al Smith (probably) aren't "bovvered!"

Why do some magicians only buy (read) magic if it's only instantly available? Well, I know why. It's just that these same magicians are too lazy to seek out magic. When I started to buy my own products (books) as a teenager (mid 1970's), part of the excitement and joy was hunting for the stuff in the first place. Once you located it (without the aid of google), you then had the joy of saving for it, sending off your cheque and then the long-excited wait until "plop"; the sound of the long-awaited parcel falling through the letterbox. Well, if you want to read the writings of folks like Karl Fulves and Al Smith, the same process applies in 2010. And why not. Bravo! You cannot buy their material online and you can't download it. But, some see that as a negative. Well, believe me - neither Al or Karl are "bovvered." The want-it-now brigade just don't seem to "get" it. The want-it-now brigade - from my experience - probably wouldn't want to read the material, anyway. Remember the kid who said to me (in some weird inarticulate mumble), "We want dvds. None of us read books no more!" Oh really. I'm enlightened. Look...

As the years pass, I know why more folks from my generation (and older) last longer in this business. It's because we learnt (learned) our craft (craft?) the long, but ever so enjoyable, everlasting way. Impatience weeded out the merely vaguely curious. But, I've noticed a lot of people come and go in the last ten years or so. They burn out fast! Or, - and this is my main point here - they eventually find out that there is no shortcut to being good at this lark. You can't bypass any part of the learning process. Then, later on, you can't beat the experience of real live performance. Look...

For some odd reason, I'm often sent (by dealers and creators) the latest dvd releases for comment. Most are simply dire! Most are the fodder of the burn-out-fast kids. Most feature whizz-bang magic performed by someone who clearly has no expereince of performing. Okay; not all magicians have to be performers...but, don't try and kid a kidder! Many of these dvds proclaim the material to be stuff from the real world! (What?) But what irks me is that most of the creators/performers simply have minimal magic knowledge. Look fellas, "magic" did not start in the era of David Blaine. And, putting six tricks on a two-hour 40 quid dvd (padded with graphics, rock music and slow walks to camera) ain't on. In my humble opinion you'd be better off spending your 40 quid on a year sub to Al Smith's LaBal or a few Kark Fulves booklets. But, if you're not prepared to write a cheque and toddle off to the postbox....(more to follow)

Well, I had a great time lecturing and performing in Stuttgart. Thorsten Strotmann is a fantastic host and a heck of a performer. He did a 2 hour show of varied sleight of hand magic; and he's fantastic. He worked very hard. It's so good to see classy sleight of hand stuff performed so well; and by a fun and charming performer. Thorsten owns and runs Strotmann's magic loung in Stuttgart. It's a fantastic venue. Specifically built for close-up performance with tiered seating. Oh, how I'd love to own such a venue. I have just finished performing and lecturing in Monte Carlo and in Nice. Performing and teaching card magic on the French Riviera aint too shabby! The hospitality was fantastic. My wife and I stayed with an old (magic) friend, the multi-talented and charming Julien Daniel. Our host was Gerald Mainart; a truly wonderful host. Lots of card magic (and eating) until the wee small hours! To be a part of The Magic Stars of Monte Carlo was/is an honour. The line-up was top-notch. Topas and Charlie Frye were/are my favs!

When I get the photos, I'll post them here. Now, off to Sweden to lecture to and entertain 500 registrants. Good times!

5) The IBM convention (Eastbourne) was the weakest I've been to in 35 years of attending. Few of the close-uppers in both the competition and professional show did close-up. Most were stage acts. Not good; not close-up. Attendance was down and the atmosphere was really tired and lack-lustre! The ONLY person doing impromptu close-up in the convention hotel (headquarters) was me! But, I got Walt Lees to join in at one stage. He's so good! Why don't people do stuff in the hotels anymore? All the finger-flingers and magical masturbators were there; but NONE were performing their miracles from their one-trick dvds. Go figure!
Methinks they (thems that be) ought to have a dealer-only low-price ticket and I think they should scrap the raffle, dinner and a few other musty bits! I think there should be more close-up stuff (real close-up) and fewer competitions. Truly, many of the (competition) acts were awful; really bad! Oh well...on it goes!

Magic News, Thoughts, Comments, Funnies for August/Sept 2010

1) Some of you will know that I recently offered you all a FREE (no strings attached) packet trick of mine to the magic community. Well, the offer closed at midnight and a whopping 483 people asked for, and got, a copy! The feedback has been amazing, too. Glad you all like(d) it. If you've still not sent me feedback, you still can.

2) I'm often asked why I don't (or, didn't) enter card/close-up competitions. Well, I did when I was a teenager; and I won the card competition for Sussex in 1977 and 1981. But, by the mid 1980's I had a change of heart triggered by two instances. Firstly, I read an article saying that there is no place for competition in art. How true! I mean, as art (magic) is subjective, how can it be judged? It can't. And, are the judges qualified to judge in the first place? An example is that a recent card competition (for a well known club) was judged by three well-known judges; none of whom have any knowledge about card magic. Also, a recent "close-up for pros" competition in the US was judged by three "names", but none of the "names" were/are pros themselves! And, to be frank, what's the point? Prize money; yes, I guess. Trophies; so what. I guess I just don't get it. It certainly has made no difference whatsoever to my career as a professional entertainer. Laymen really don't care if you've won awards or not, and neither do most magicians. It also leads me to my thought that most close-up competitions I see these days appear to be more like mini-cabaret acts; where the acts stand and "play" big. Isn't close-up supposed to be small/intimate? Wouldn't all close-up competitions be best held in a local pub/bar/restaurant? You could then let the paying public judge! Food for thought!? Secondly, I sat behind three judges at a major competition about thirty years ago. One judge whispered to the other, "No, I won't vote fo him...he won last year!" That comment just about says it all! There is more I could say, but to be frank - I'm boring myself!

3) What am I up to? Well, I'm writing my "big" best-of book. At this stage, the contents will be the very best of my impromptu effects. No fakes, gaffs, extras etc. Just one deck of cards items. So far, I've got over 150 effects; all taken from a 30 year creating period. And, I'm really pleased with the look of it. I'm going to keep photos to a minimum to ensure more content; and I'm also going to have to assume my readers know the basic moves. But, whatever the final content - the book will be a beautifully produced stitched hardback. A book for a lifetime; one to take with you on your travels and one to dip into from time to time. A book crammed full of, imho, gems! Watch out for it...

4) If you go to my website you'll also see I have a busy schedule of lectures and conventions not to mention my Card Capers day of magic, which, in 2011, will be in Glasgow, Manchester and Worthing. If you've not seen me lecture before, why not? :) Joking aside, why not come and see me? My 2010/11 lecture contains loads of new goodies, too. I try and make the lectures fast-paced, energetic, jam-packed (with magic) and fun. Come find out if it's true!

5) May I suggest you take a peek at Al Smith's LaBal magic magazine. It's a non glossy (hallelujah) publication crammed full of reviews, comments, humour, magic, tips and more. I love it. My only gripe is that I wish it were monthly...no, weekly! But, it's well worth the couple-of-months (or so) wait...go subscribe NOW! Email me for Al's email.

6) Long is the debate about books vs pdfs etc. Well, I've said it before - but you cannot beat the joy of owning a book! How can a lump of plastic or a file on your pc compete with the joy of owning a good book. It's not just about the content or medium for learning, it's about the memories that come with owning books. I truly believe I'm a dedicated magician because the initial learning process was NOT easy! I had to search long and hard for the secrets I learnt when I was a kid. And it was fun and exciting. I had to go to the local library (remember them?) and then, to go a step furthur, I had to save money (6 months of cleaning my dad's car/odd jobs etc) to buy a book. Then the exciting wait for said book to arrive, and then the joy of working my way through the book. Finding gem after gem. Such joy! If I pluck my original copy of Harry Lorayne's Close-up Card Magic off my shelf and open it, I can instantly smell/feel 1976 all over again. I can see myself sitting in my parents home with my head buried in the book. Wondrous memories. But, it "encouraged" longevity and dedication in a way that a pdf can't. But, I guess if you've not experienced my way of learning, you'll have no idea what I'm talking about and might disregard my comments as the ramblings of a sentimental old fool. I hope not.

7) Recently overheard by my wife at a convention: One young magician asked another how long had he been a professional. Reply, "Since I was three years old!" And he wasn't joking!

8) Recently read (by me) on the website of a well-known "professional" magician: "Available for any evening function anywhere" There is an asterix by the word "evening". Then, at the foot of the page, it states "*, Unable to do daytime functions as I don't finish work until 5pm." I both rolled my eyes (way up in my head) and had a good chuckle!

Magic Book Memories

It's a shame that some (not all) of the youngsters in magic haven't embraced the joys of learning magic from books and magazines. I still find it a thrill to re-read an old magic book and discover a hidden gem. Does anyone else think that learning magic is made a tad too easy these days; what with downloads/dvds/YouTube etc? When I was a kid, part of the thrill was saving up pocket money (and cleaning my dads car etc) for months on end just to buy a magic book. Then the excitement of pawing through the book and finding secret after secret. Ah, so exciting! Those books (purchased through the 70's) are still on my shelf and still evoke memories. I think the process of learning is what fuels longevity of interest. It sifts out the ones that are merely curious.

Well, a few weeks ago I offered a FREE hardback book of mine to the community. The response was incredible. In total, 391 copies were taken. And, in 23 different countries! Boy, was I busy with parceling stuff up! My thanks to you are due to the hundreds of thank you letters, calles and emails I received. It seems that many of you are using many items from said book; Professional Card Magic Miracles.

So why did I do it? Well, it's simple: I just wanted to give back something to the fraternity. After many years hard work, I have now reached my personal (financial) goals and am now in a position to give back to the fraternity; and I did...in spades! A £20 book for free. (Btw, the offer is now closed.)

Is there a negative side to this? Well, yes there is. A few weirdos on Magic Bunny (web forum) asked for a free book, got it and then subsequently accused me of promotion! Charming, eh!? The usual anonymous types who hide behind a keyboard in their lonely little rented bedsits. Sad, really!

Tough Trade Show - Recollection.

I'm often asked, by other magicians, as to why I don't do trade shows anymore. Well, the answer is simple. Thankfully, I don't have to anymore. (I guess a lot of hard work paid off...literally.) I never really liked them anyway. Too frantic! But, here's a recollection for you...

One of the toughest I ever did was in the year 2000. I did 10 consecutive days at Olympia in London during a very hot spell. Each day commenced at 9am and finished at 7pm. And, get this, NO breaks. Yes, I used to nibble at "easy to nibble" food that I stashed under the counter. (Mini pork pies cut into four. Grapes, cheese chunks etc.) But, phew - what energy was required! Those of you who have seen me work know that I'm an energetic performer, but this was extreme! Non-stop performing...and I mean NON-STOP! Tens of thousands of punters per day...all jaded, all tired, all brow-beaten; some grumpy, some fat heads, some "seen it all"... Noisy hall, sore throat, o.t.t pitching, tired legs, hurting back etc... And, you know what? In 2000, I could still stay at high-octane energy for ten hours a day. Not anymore, though!

But, if I say so myself - I was pretty good at it because I was "on" all the time. I never flagged, and if I did - I hid it well. Every punter got 100% from me. (Many trade show magicians I've witnessed working are mostly noticible by both their absence and/or lack of energy. I so often see, "Back in 20 minutes" signs!)

Pee break? I rarely needed one as I was dehydrated most of the time; I kind of sweat it off! And as for the air-conditioning...don't even go there! (By the way, I'm not grumbling; just recollecting.) And, I did all the trade shows by commuting...I've never liked London hotels; they are the worst you can find.

So, yes - it was tough (well, as "tough" as any magic/performance can be compared to, say, factory/building work etc) but the pay was wonderful. So, if you want experience at the toughest part of being a pro magician, go get yourself a long engagement at a few trade shows...and work hard.

1) Since my hospitalisation I'm feeling much better. Sore, but better! Old age creeping in I guess.

This collection of sleights and subtleties is what it says it is: 35 Really Useful Card Sleights. There are no tricks to be found anywhere, but there is plenty of chat and loads of pointers on mix and mingle usage.

Those of us who love to tinker with cards tend to spend time messing around with moves and principles that we rarely, sometimes never use. Nothing wrong with that; even though such activity has been known to bring snorts of derision from certain quarters. It’s fun and can be therapeutic. And, frequently, out of this fun comes practical benefit. Some moves stay with us. Gimmicks that take up no space in the back pocket and don’t need to be got rid of after use. They become part of our makeup. These are the sort of moves included on this DVD. Here’s the list:

Phew.

Because we’re individuals with different traits and we carry our idiosyncratic burdens and demons, not all of these moves will find their way into the stockpile of all card persons. That’s as it should be. But collected together and presented like this does give us a chance to consider which of the delights suits our style and personality.

This is a nuts and bolts, virtually unplugged DVD. No packaging to speak of, it comes in a plain, see through snap-disc holder, bearing the title and little else. On the DVD itself, Paul Gordon rationalises this approach adding:

“I had thought of using modern graphics, snazzy titles and loud rock music to help 'sell' this project. Then I thought better of it. I thought you’d appreciate more content and less gloss.”

Following that statement, the official introduction to the disc gets under way and offers more proof that Mister Gordon has a sense of humour. Shot in glorious black and white and reminiscent of an old cinema newsreel, Mister Gordon advises us that this will be the only time we see his face during the tutorial, all attention will be on hands and cards.

There’s something in this hands-only approach that other DVD “tutors” might want to ponder.

Following the black and white introduction we drift into colour and first up is a five minute Paul Gordon Showreel intermission. This consists of a series of live action footage clips from various performances. They serve as a sort of demonstration of the practical nature of the some of the material and as a reminder of other Paul Gordon wares.

The performance pieces have a place because they give substance to the subject. However, the plugs are a bit blatant and because of that they could be interpreted, even dismissed, as filler. But they’re not filler, simply because, following this interlude, we move into the core of the stuff on offer; and what the title says is what we get. Clear and to-the-point demonstrations and explanations of 35 Really Useful Card Sleights. Added to which, amid the general comment and conversation there are reams of solid—useful—information.

My views on magic’s DVD revolution are no secret. For every good one, there are dozens that are little more than a money-grubbing waste of space and should have been smothered at birth.

This is one of the good ones. And at a mere fifteen quid, it’s very good value for money. Even if you already know the moves, it’s nice to see them performed, and analysed in this manner. And if you don’t know the moves this is a good place to start checking them out.

Some of the material has been scattered here and there and explained on other Paul Gordon DVDs, but not all. And as far as I can tell this is all new footage. So if you have some of Paul’s other work, don’t let that put you off. It’s still value for money..

FUNNY STORY about Advertising! (It'll make you roll your eyes!)

I was recently reminded of this true story. It's a shame I didn't "put" it in The Real Secrets of Card Magic. Anyway...

About 15 years ago, a magician (whom I knew quite well) rang me for my opinion about his failed Yellow Pages advertising campaign. Remember, this is pre-internet. The call went a bit like this:

"Hi Paul. Can I ask your advice? About 4 months ago I placed £3000 worth of adverts in the Yellow Pages. But, since then - I've not even had a single enquiry...nothing! I don't know why."

I replied, "Well, it could be about placement. Was it in the correct regions? Was it in the correct sections of TYP? But, it could be about content. You know, some adverts are too wordy. Some don't catch the eye. Some aren't 'obvious' enough. In my opinion, a good advert should have your 'role' in big bold letters followed by a small tagline. A 'descriptive' photo/log and contact info." Anyway, I quizzed and question him for about half an hour. He was non-plussed throughout.

Finally, he said...

"Could it be that I got my phone number wrong?"

I rolled my eyes, sighed...and politely ended the call. I looked at the phone and yelled, "Aaargh!"

The Very Best of Paul Gordon - Hardback Book due 2011

I've got the working title sorted (TVBOPG), but little else! TVBOPG will be, for sure, a top-quality stitched-pages foil-embossed hardback. It's only natural for me, as creator and author, to want to include all of my published effects created since 1977 - but, the list is about 1000 strong! I truly love them all; well, 90% of them. Even then, I can't put 900 effects in a book!

So, methinks I'll have to somehow whittle the list to about 100. I think I'll concentrate on tricks that I know both fool and entertain laymen. For this project, maybe I'll leave out some of the more "involved" and/or "experimental" tricks. You see, everytime I try and negate a trick, someone shows it to me (which is always fun) - or I see it performed at a convention - I fall in love with it all over again! Oh, I don't know. The decision process is painful.

Whatever I eventually decide to do, I promise you a good book of all-strong impromptu card tricks. I want it to be a book that will be a "keeper" - that's my goal, anyway!

I've just noticed that Bill Malone is performing Marlo's Miracle Routine on an L&L DVD that is being offered with the new Michael Close DVD set. Well...

Back in 1994, I released a booklet (and video to match) called "Fantasy Gambling Demonstration". It was/is based on Marlo's Miracle Routine. I used to perform it a lot; mainly at my lectures from 1989 through to 1997. In 1997, I re-released the routine in Nocturnal Creations. Check it out! It's an important "take" on Marlo's routine. It used to get great responses when I performed/taught it at lectures.

So why am I telling you this?

Well, of late - I've seen a lot of performers using my routine...the Fantasy Gambling Demonstration. Most do it well. It's nice to see it revived! As I say, check it out!

Cameron Francis review (on The Magic Cafe) of Card Startlers 3 DVD set by Paul Gordon

Just finished watching and all I can say is Wow! I love this set. Great practical card stuff! The perfect set for lovers of card magic.

My previous exposure to Paul's stuff was through some of Peter Duffie's compilation ebooks and Aldo Colombini's books and dvds. Nice to finally see the man himself at work. I especially enjoyed the live segments where you see him perform for lay folk.

Favorites from the set would be hard to pick as there are many but some of them include: Diminishing Not Likely, Twister, Emulsion Cards, Knock Em Dead, Jinx Force Concept, Eureka!, Fry Them With Oil And Water, Session Stunner, Twin Peeks, What A Triple Kick.

The best part is that most of it is very easy to do. Not knuckle busting material at all. But the cleverness of some of the concepts will make you smile. Loads of fun stuff to play with. Some minor set ups for some tricks but nothing you couldn't do quickly. Lots of impromptu stuff, too.

The dvds are PAL, however I had no problem playing them on my Mac. I'm sure they would play fine on PCs as well.

I believe it's only available through Paul's website at this point. If you like strong card magic, get it. SEE HERE

On a side note, for any of you who own my Killer Close Up dvd, the first routine on the disc, Ace-Equence, contains an opening effect which is very similar to Paul's effect "Eureka!". This was a case of independent creation as I was not aware of Paul's routine at the time. However, all credit for the effect goes to Paul."

Darwin Ortiz's Remote Control & Paul Gordon's Twin Peeks

Recently, in some glossy US magic magazine, a "critic" said that "Paul Gordon's 'Twin Peeks', although excellent, is a variation of Darwin Ortiz's 'Remote Control' effect!" WRONG! It's the other way around! Darwin Ortiz's 'Remote Control' is a variation of my 'Twin Peeks' effect; as noted by Darwin himself in his book (and dvd to compliment), Scams and Fantasies. 'Twin Peeks' first appeared (marketed by Aldo Colombini) in 1996. I then published it in Card Magic Miracles (2000). The next year it was reprinted (and updated) in Professional Card Magic Miracles. In 2008, Peter Duffie asked permission to add it to one of his 'mental' tomes. In 2010, I videod/explained it for the first time in my 3-DVD set, Card Startlers!

My routine, in my biased humble opinion, is a killer. A killer and easy to do! You MUST, I insist, try it!
